Surrounded by music from an early age, the Gregorič siblings, Mira on the violin and Sara on the guitar, played music together as early as preschool. The first public appearance soon followed and as part of the music education at what is now the Slove-nian Music School of the Province of Carinthia, first prizes in competitions followed. The music studies led the two sisters to Vienna to the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and to Linz to the Anton Bruckner Private University, where they expanded their musical activities as artists, their stylistic curiosity and also completed their pedagogical studies.
The Duo Sonoma is characterized by the fact that they have been making music together for over 20 years, which is reflected in the sisters‘ unique interaction. The communication while playing takes place on a non-verbal basis. A sense of togetherness can be felt from the first note played.
Their own compositions emerge from a combination of different music genres, which are influenced by classical music, tango and jazz improvisation, folk melodies and contemporary music as well as Neue Musik. Their respective background (rhythmic studies, classical studies and jazz studies) and different musical focuses lead to an extraordinary synthesis in the compositions of the sisters.
In spring 2021, the duo’s first CD was released under the title “DUO SONOMA – I”, which represents a collection of their own compositions so far. Characterized by personal experiences, their compositions include quiet moments that are broken by rhythmic elements. Each piece is unique in its own way and unmistakable in its structure.
In addition to artistic activity on international soil (Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Spain, Hungary, among others), it is very im-portant for the Duo Sonoma to maintain the connection to their homeland and combine their music in performances across art disciplines.
