“A Journey to the Cinematic Seasons of Yesteryears… From Egyptian Cinemas in Ramadan to Cinema Clubs in 2024”

Before TV series became predominantly associated with the Ramadan season, and long before the viewing season in Ramadan turned into a massive competitive race among dramas aired over 30 episodes throughout the month, cinemas were the preferred choice for film producers in the past. Back then, cinema producers presented films competing for box office success during the holy month, aiming to achieve the highest revenues for their films. They were indeed right to bet on achieving greater revenues when screening films during Ramadan, as there weren’t many available choices like watching TV at home (or watching series newly aired on digital platforms). It was customary for audiences in Egypt to go out to watch new movies in theaters.

We invite you to our new program at Jesuit Cinema Club, where we will screen famous classic Egyptian films that were shown in theaters during past Ramadan months. Get ready to relive some of the atmospheres of this “cinematic” season as it once was, on the big screen as it happened many years ago.

Under the pressure from their families, (Farid) and (Yasmine) find themselves forced into marriage to inherit a huge estate left by their uncle on the condition that they marry. The two agree that their marriage will be merely symbolic and end in divorce after receiving the inheritance. However, an unexpected surprise occurs when they spend their honeymoon in Aswan. Love blossoms between them, turning their relationship from mere pretense under family pressure into reality.
