About Literary Translation

The beginnings and challenges,

and a look at specialization in translation within the themes of fantasy, mythology, and comic translation. It will also cover the cultural and historical backgrounds and other elements that specialized translators need. The seminar will discuss methods for translators to improve their language and cultural understanding, as well as solutions they resort to when facing the aforementioned challenges.

About the Translators:

Mr. Mahmoud Radi
An Egyptian translator, born in Alexandria in 1986, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media from the Faculty of Arts at Alexandria University in 2007. He has worked in academic and journalistic translation, content editing, and film criticism before focusing on literary translation. His translations from English include: The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester, The Complete Nine: The Epic of Gikuyu and Mumbi by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Night Shift by Stephen King, Nonsense Novels by Stephen Leacock, and The 50th Law by 50 Cent and Robert Greene.

Mr. Mohamed Gamal
An Egyptian writer and translator, he has published Flying – 2021, The Book of Disappointment – 2018, and Children of Nut: Ancient Egyptian Myths – 2024. He has also translated several works from English to Arabic, including: The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell, Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman, and Swimming in a Pond in the Rain by George Saunders. He won the Akhbar Al-Adab Novel Award in 2017 and received the AFAC Creative Writing Grant in 2022.

Mr. Hesham Fahmy
An Egyptian translator and writer, born in Alexandria in 1983, he studied English literature and translation at Alexandria University. He has worked as a translator and writer for various newspapers and magazines. Fahmy has translated a large number of international works, most of which belong to the fantasy genre. His translations include: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Ice Dragon, A Song for Lya, and Fire & Blood (editor) by George R.R. About the Moderator:

Rola Adel Rashwan
An Egyptian translator, she graduated from the Faculty of Al-Alsun, majoring in Russian. She trained at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later worked in the tourism industry. She has published many literary articles and translations in various cultural circles, both in Egypt and abroad. She currently works in translation and content writing in three languages: Arabic, English, and Russian. Her translations include: Judas, Baba Yaga, Rosa, Indignation, The Maltese Falcon, The Machine of Peace, Princess Tarakanova, Olesya, and The Last Days in the Life of Tolstoy.
