About Event:

The Jesuit Cultural Center is pleased to offer you a collection of short films from China. These films present the creativity and execution of the Chinese youth, which will allow us to learn how each of them sees themselves and the world around them, and how they visually express their vision.

 

The films are chosen, translated and presented by: Wang Dingyun

 

We are honoured to screen the following films:

 

– “Summer behind the door”

About the film:

A girl who has always had a subtle affection for her teacher witnessed an “imaginary journey” in her heart. Facing other people’s mockery and her inner fear, she finally makes a decision.

About the director:

Yinghai

He graduated from the Photography Department of the Beijing Film Academy. He directed and produced 4 short films, and is currently preparing for his first long feature film. He is committed to producing films with surreal themes, as his drawing experience of almost 10 years enables him to see films with a painter’s mentality. He is eager to bring deep resonance in the audience subconscious through intuitive expression of images.

 

– “Hot pot”

About the film:

A young girl forgot about her birthday as she was overwhelmed with work. She couldn’t even find a pot when she wanted to cook. In the  midst of all of these worries, she tried to escape from reality by pretending that the problem didn’t exist, but in the end, her father’s love and friendship saved her.

About Director:

Yang Chawyi

Theatre and film director, screenwriter. She graduated from the Stage Design Department of the Shanghai Theatre Academy and directed and produced 3 short films.

 

 

“Bao Girl”

About the film:

By recording the real life conditions of “Bao girl”, a young independent photographer, the film explores the meaning of “loneliness”, and the issue of women living alone in the current Chinese society.

About the filmmaker:

Wang Ying Ying

An independent photographer and documentary filmmaker. She received the Leading Artist Award from the American Center for Art Photography in 2017. Her works focuses on women’s life and fate.

 

 

– “Swimming in the whale’s belly “

About the film:

Deng Mao, an emotionally isolated electronic musician, learned that his father, who had been missing for many years, had died in his hometown; He died six months ago and became an unclaimed body. On his trip to his hometown, childhood memories became gradually clearer.. After a very surreal and familiar dream, Deng Mao found out the fateful resemblance between him and his father.

About the Director:

Chung Kaifeng

He graduated from the Chinese Central Academy of Drama with a specialty in film directing. He directed 3 short films and also wrote scripts and novels, and composed music. He won the “Promising Director” award at the China Golden Rooster Innovation and Investment Conference in 2022.

 

 

– “Planet B602”

About the film:

As the pandemic began in early 2020, many cities around the world began to close. When the entire living space became a room, and memories were gradually lost every day, the room became a planet. Although there is no need to worry about basic living needs when wandering around this planet, people on the planet, such as people on Earth, always want to explore the universe and go to the vast space, and use their curiosity to reach the highest and most distant places.

About the director of the film:

Zhang Tianyu

A documentary films director, screenwriter and producer, he graduated from University College London and specialised in documentary anthropology. He directed four short films. His film “Jane Eyre”, which records the psychological journey of Gaba Asan, a Yi singer, won the award for outstanding short documentary at the 2017 New Concept Film Festival in San Francisco.

 

 

– “date on the beach”

About the film:

In 2040, the continuous drainage of global pollutants caused serious pollution of seawater and coastal areas, which are no longer suitable for human life. As a result, people have initiated an internal migration plan. Akai, a young man with colour blindness, in red and blue, is going out on a date with his girlfriend online, whom he had never met on the beach near where her friend lived. Without the ability to see the true colour of the seawater, there is a silent conversation between the sea, his girlfriend and his heart.

– About the directors:

– Ma Wenroy was obsessed with creating images. he once worked in film planning and now works for an Internet company.

– Yuan Zitian, Advertising Editor.

 

The film screening is followed by an open discussion with the audience managed by Ms. Wang Dingyun

Wang Dingyun

Professor in Arabic and its literature and has five published literary translations. She is also an artist with a deep belief in cultural diversity. As a Chinese classical dancer, theatre actress, and content creator, she is passionate about exploring the different boundaries between herself and the world through verbal and physical expression.
