About Event:

physical and mental plasticity of the actor, to help the actor see and perform reality in alternative ways. The BoxWhatBox performer can perform interculturally, using universal modes of expression found in the body and voice.
BoxWhatBox is exceptionally useful for professional performers, also for all people who want to increase their expressive ability, and to understand more clearly the expressions of others. This is an important skill in sectors such as business, and medicine.
BoxWhatBox comprises 3 work phases, or areas of concentration:
• Demechanisation
• Rhythm
• Non-Linear Creation
Each day begins with physical training in Neutralization and Demechanisation, designed to provide the actor with control over their creative state. These principles are communicated through the playing of games and exercises using sticks, balls, and the human body. Through play, the actor refines their ability to identify physical and emotional habits which impede their expressiveness.
The second phase of each workshop involves training in Rhythm principles: individual, ensemble, and scenic responsibility form the basis of rhythm training. In ensemble, pairs and solo work, actors use their bodies and voices as rhythmic instruments. All performances are music.
The third phase of the workshop involves Non-Linear Creation. Through the use of études, targeted improvisation with specific character or scenic objectives, performers refine their abilities in using the four expressive vocabularies collectively, in settings where there is no text to rely upon. The emphasis is on creating performance that can be understood in any culture.
Four Expressive Vocabularies
Later in the work, the Four Expressive Vocabularies are introduced and developed, through games, exercises, and études. These four vocabularies are:
• Verbal (Inflection, Tone, Volume, Cadence)
• Non-Verbal (All sounds that are not words)
• Postural (The position of the body towards, away from, in proximity or at distance)
• Gestural The semiotics of each body part (hands, feet, face, hips, etc.)
