The Open Door: An Individual’s Biography and a Nation’s History

Jesuit Book Club – Discussion with the Author: Mrs. Omayma Abd El-Shafy

“The novel “The Open Door” is a groundbreaking work in Arab women’s literature. Latifa Al-Zayyat, a genuine writer, portrayed the quest for freedom not as an easy and straightforward path, but rather depicted it with all its obstacles, difficulties, and pitfalls, as well as its moments of beauty and tranquility. Through “The Open Door,” she opened the door for generations of female writers who associate themselves with her and continue on the path she paved.” – Radwa Ashour

Layla is a smart and vibrant girl living in a traditional society that expects nothing from women but submission and obedience. However, Layla is not ready to surrender easily. She fights to attain her freedom as a human being and also becomes involved in the national movement to liberate her country. As Egypt boils and revolts during the 1940s and 1950s, facing setbacks and triumphs, we live with Layla her hopes, defeats, and victories in her personal life in pursuit of genuine love. Will she find the strength within herself to open the door and move forward? This remarkable novel skillfully navigates between the intimate and the public, between the individual’s biography and the nation’s history.

Director Henry Barakat adapted it into a successful film starring Faten Hamama and Salah Zulfakar, winning the awards for Best Film and Best Actress for Faten Hamama at the Jakarta Film Festival.

We invite you to attend the screening of “The Open Door” film followed by an open discussion about the novel and the author, Latifa Al-Zayyat, at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at the Jesuit Cultural Center.
