Screening Segment: “Tense Relationships: Cinema Re-examining the Unfamiliar”

In the screening segment “Tense Relationships: Cinema Re-examining the Depths of the Soul,” we explore how cinema can address internal human complexities and their reflections on relationships with others. How can cinema express the most unthought-of daily experiences in a way that surprises us, urging us to rediscover what we think we know about ourselves and those closest to us? We invite you to join us for a unique cinematic experience exploring friendship, separation, and connection.

The Banshees of Inisherin
In the spring of 1923, near the end of the Irish Civil War, on the fictional island of Inisherin, “Colm,” a musician, suddenly begins ignoring his best friend “Padraic” without warning. When a shocked and hurt Padraic presses for an explanation, Colm replies that he finds Padraic boring and would prefer to spend the rest of his life composing music and doing things he will be remembered for. Padraic refuses to accept this, and as he continues to try to mend the friendship, Colm grows more resistant. Eventually, Colm gives Padraic a strange ultimatum: every time Padraic talks to him, Colm will cut off one of his own fingers.

The film received numerous nominations, with a total of 362 nominations and winning 114 awards, including the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
