“Japanese Film Week…Japanese Film Week”
In this segment, we are delighted at the Jesuit Cinema Club to host a special screening of Japanese films in partnership with the Japan Foundation in Cairo.
Two films will be shown consecutively on the same day, and two more films will be screened the following day at the same time. The screenings for this segment will exceptionally begin on Friday, February 7, starting at 3:00 PM for the first film of the event, and the second and final film of the day will begin at 7:00 PM.
First Screening:
Father of the Milky Way Railroad
A family drama depicting the life of the famous Japanese author Kenji Miyazawa, who enjoys local fame in Japan, presented from the perspective of his father.
Kenji Miyazawa was born in 1896 in Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan. He is one of Japan’s most famous and popular authors, leaving behind numerous children’s stories and poems. It is known that Miyazawa lived a short life and did not receive much recognition during his lifetime. However, this film is told from the perspective of a less famous figure—his father, who loved his son deeply and always believed in his talents. This touching family drama unfolds against the backdrop of the beautiful natural landscapes of Iwate Prefecture.
Koji Yakusho, a globally renowned actor, needs no introduction. He won the Best Actor award at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival (for the film Perfect Days directed by Wim Wenders). Yakusho plays the father, who brings a comedic touch despite the serious situations surrounding him. Masaki Suda is one of Japan’s finest young actors, known for his popularity and mastery of his craft. He skillfully portrays the volatile side of Miyazawa’s personality, as well as the kind and sensitive side that led him to write stories for his beloved younger sister, who was ill, and to strive to be useful to others. The performances of these two actors, representing contemporary Japanese cinema, are a must-see.
