PLASTICPHONIA – Music Made from Plastic from the Sea – Workshop with Crystn Hunt Akron

What if the plastic polluting our planet could speak—what would it say? And what does it sound like when waste becomes music?

Join artist and composer Crystn Hunt Akron in this unique music workshop and turn your collected plastic waste into powerful soundscapes.

In this hands-on experience, you’ll explore how art can give a voice to the global plastic crisis — transforming trash into music, and awareness into action.

What’s the purpose of this workshop?
Plastic waste doesn’t just disappear. It lingers for centuries, polluting ecosystems and threatening marine life. In Plasticphonia, we reimagine this polluting material as an instrument — raising awareness through creativity and collective sound-making.

What to expect:
Day 1 | May 12 | 5 -9 PM: The workshop kicks off with introductions and conversations around plastic consumption, climate change, and the stories behind the plastic that surrounds us.
Important: We invite you to visit the beach or your local area and collect plastic waste before the workshop. Bring materials that speak to you — unusual shapes, textures, or colors — anything you think might have a story to tell or a sound to offer. You will use these plastics and turn them into instruments and sounds.

Days 2 & 3 | May 13 & 14 | 5 – 9 PM: Time to make some noise. Crystn Hunt Akron will guide participants through the process of turning plastic waste into sound samples. Together, you’ll record, manipulate, and compose a collaborative track. The workshop wraps up with a live performance of the final piece on Friday, May 16 at the Jesuit Cultural Center.

Who can join?
Musicians
Sound Designers
Storytellers interested about the intersection of sound, and sustainability.

How to imagine a world that benefits both – us and our ecosystem?
SABBART, a blend of Sabbar (Arabic for “cactus”) and Art, explores how arts and culture can shape a more sustainable future.

In its second edition, SABBART turns to the elements — fire, water, earth, and wind — as the natural forces that shape our landscapes, sustain life, and challenge our ways of living. Through diverse artistic perspectives and cultural exchanges, we aim to inspire reflection and dialogue for a more eco-social world.

This workshop is supported by the EUNIC Egypt, and the Austrian Cultural Forum in the framework of SABBART.
