We are delighted to host a special screening of Japanese films in partnership with the Japan Foundation in Cairo. This event will feature two films shown consecutively on the same day. The screenings will exceptionally start at 3 PM for the first film, followed by the second and final film of the day at 7 PM.
First Screening:
The Zen Diary
My Mountain Diary
A contemplative drama exploring the true essence of wealth through the beauty of nature across the four seasons and the flavors of rural meals.
Tsutomu (played by Kenji Sawada), an elderly writer, moves to a mountain cabin in Nagano Prefecture, west of Tokyo, known for its beautiful mountain ranges. He lives day by day, carefully preparing simple meals he learned from a Zen monk at the temple where he grew up. He uses vegetables he grows himself and wild plants he forages. Machiko (played by Takako Matsu), an editor, visits Tsutomu from Tokyo occasionally and enjoys his cooking. The story explores how we can live life mindfully and questions what true wealth means through the life of a man who cherishes nature, cooking, and the gratitude of sharing a meal with others.
Based on an essay by novelist Tsutomu Mizukami, a renowned writer in the 1960s and 1970s, about his own experiences. The film features the culinary expertise of renowned chef Yoshiharu Doi, who recreates Zen temple cuisine. Kenji Sawada, one of Japan’s biggest pop stars with a brilliant acting career, including lead roles in films by masters like Seijun Suzuki, plays the role of Tsutomu.
Second Screening:
The House of the Lost on the Cape
An elderly woman in a magical seaside house shelters two runaway girls and strange creatures that hover around them.

She offers them a place to stay in an old, slightly dilapidated house overlooking the sea, known as the Mayuga House. Despite joining Kiwa unexpectedly, the girls find comfort in Mayuga, a legendary house said to care for lost travelers, and in Kiwa’s warm hospitality. Gradually, their wounded hearts begin to heal. However, one day, strange creatures called “Fushigito” by Kiwa start appearing around the house…
